Redwood’s latest outing took us to hear reflections from Robert Peston about Keir Starmer’s time in office and the challenges facing Burnham.
In a wide-ranging discussion, chaired by the BBC’s Jonny Dymond, Robert Peston shared his views about Starmer’s achievements in office – for example on foreign policy – but also the way that these have been overshadowed by the Government’s failure to focus single-mindedly on growth and tell a story to retain voters’ trust and earn the confidence of investors.
He also touched on the issue of development – in response to a question from Yours Truly. It is not the only answer to economic growth but the development industry has an important role to play in delivering economic growth. His view is that it is particularly important that we should be delivering housing that young people can afford.
He also discussed the importance of political stability and an end to endless changes in Prime Minister. Having had 7 PMs in the last 10 years has made us “an international laughing stock”.
Of Burnham’s agenda, his view is that devolution can play a vital role in achieving growth – regional political leaders have more incentive to incentive to build homes and infrastructure if the region they represent gets to keep more the proceeds.

The pièce de résistance, however, was talking to the man himself as he signed one of his books for my daughter – encouraging the next generation to get involved in our National debate.
